How the umpire calls a game won

The match she is proudest of

“The TDC Series Masters, because I beat the number 3 and reached the final.”

— Nicole

Story

“I don't need it to be easy. I need to keep fighting.”

— Nicole

In her words

“I started playing at eight; my mum took me. I love giving a hundred per cent in every practice and every tournament, and tennis is how I focus on myself. When it gets hard, I think about my dreams: I picture myself winning big tournaments and making a living from this, which is what I really want.”

Who she admires

Carlos Alcaraz, for his intensity and the way he fights every point; Elena Rybakina, for her power and the confidence she brings to the big points.

Off court

Off court she loves fashion, beauty and creating content, plus music and time with her friends and family.

Playing on Gran Canaria

“The trade wind can change a match completely, and the heat and the calima make you adapt all the time. Every surface is different, and travelling to other islands or the mainland changes things even more. All of that has taught me to compete in any situation.”

Details

Always in her bag: overgrip, a notebook and a towel. Favourite drill: points and match situations. Least favourite: endurance work, when it goes on too long.

The dream

“To become a professional tennis player. I know it’s a long road, but I want to work for it. And one day, win a Grand Slam.”

Rally

  1. Nicole gets ready to serve on clay: racket in her right hand, the ball held against the strings in her left, eyes ahead.

    Before walking on

“I try to stay calm, listen to music and focus. I like to picture myself starting the match with confidence.”

  2. Nicole preparing a two-handed backhand on clay, seen from above: racket taken back, knees bent in a wide stance, her shadow falling across the court.

    The warm-up

“I get my body properly going and start to feel the ball. By the last few minutes I’m already into the match.”

  3. Nicole, in a cap and a black dress, waits for the ball with her racket up.

    Changeovers

“I breathe, drink some water and think about the next point, not the one that just happened.”

  4. Nicole stepping into a two-handed backhand on clay, seen from above, racket taken back and a long shadow across the court.

    When it gets tough

“That’s when I show my character most: fight every point and trust my game, even if I’m nervous.”

  5. Nicole finishes a stroke on a hard court at sunset, under an orange sky.

    After

“I hold on to what I learned, win or lose. Then it’s time to rest, eat well and think about the next challenge.”
